Geography

-DSC02799In Geography, the child learns the continent names while working with the hemisphere puzzle map. Alongside this activity, a basket of animals corresponding to the continent is introduced. We normally begin with Africa because of the interesting animals on that continent. Pre-Casa and Casa children never tire of making animal sounds!

We also look at the various countries within those continents and colour flags. To strengthen your child’s understanding we look at books about the continent we are studying. Children learn what people look like in a specific country, the foods they eat, their musical instruments, and animals commonly found in a geographical area.

One year, while discussing Europe, we came across Poland. Poland is famous for Baltic amber – a fossilised tree resin. Baltic amber can be found in cognac, amber or green colours. That year, we made ‘Baltic amber’ bracelets using red, yellow and green beads.

Another year, while discussing Belgium, we made a special day of it by making Belgian waffles – a hit with the children! We also made three types of chocolate bark the children shared with their families.

We’ve also made didgeridoos from Australia, thumb pianos from Kenya and pellet drums from China. Children get a different understanding of their world, when exposed to interesting and tangible information.
