Language

DSC01203Colouring is the introductory component of the Language program. It helps develop the child’s tripod grip which enables the child to hold a pencil. In using the metal insets, the child traces the frame and inset, draws serpentine lines or varies the gradients of shading. Control of movement is further refined and readies the child’s hand for tracing letters.

The child begins differentiating sounds through word play. Using sandpaper letters, the phonetic sounds of the alphabet, rather than the names of the letters associated with them, are introduced. Through a series of games, the child will now put sounds together to create three and four letter words using the moveable alphabet.

Parallel to this activity, the child learns puzzle words or memory words. There are no two words following the same sound structure, and so, the child must commit these words to memory.

Through these activities and many more, the child learns rules such as ‘s’ and ‘h’ together make the sound ‘sh’. After learning enough rules, the child learns how to become an excellent reader.

These milestones take several months to accomplish – or even years – but when the child has mastered a new skill, it is easy to add on to it.

These are the things that make the Montessori model unique and difficult to duplicate. Our program in particular has a thorough and extensive language module that took a significant amount of time to create and test.
